NEW LENS

REINTERPRETING HARRY CLARKE’S GENEVA WINDOW 100 YEARS ON

New Lens brings together fifteen incredible commissions to celebrate the centenary since Harry Clarke started working on his (in)famous Geneva Window, commissioned by the Irish Government in 1926 to represent the country at the International Labour Building in Geneva.

The Geneva Window was created in a climate of growing censorship and some of the scenes depicted by Clarke were considered to be of dubious moral character. As such the window was hidden away and never made it to Geneva and was subsequently purchased by the Wolfsonian Museum in Miami @wolfsonian) where it now resides.

One hundred years on, the exhibition, curated by Joshua Dyson and Daniel Gillick (@arisbeo_collective), aims to shine a light on this revolutionary piece of Irish art.

The exhibition showcases the legacy of the window and takes a new perspective on its place in the contemporary art world through our installation

The 'Geneva Window' is composed of fifteen panels, each inspired by the following literary works:

  1. The Wayfarer by Padraic Pearse
  2. The Story Brought by Brigit by Lady Augusta Gregory
  3. Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw
  4. The Playboy of the Western World by J. M. Synge
  5. The Others by Seumas O'Sullivan
  6. The Demi-Gods by James Stephens
  7. Juno and the Paycock by Sean O'Casey
  8. The Dreamers by Lennox Robinson
  9. The Countess Cathleen by William Butler Yeats
  10. Mr Gilhooley by Liam O'Flaherty
  11. Deirdre by George 'A' Russell
  12. A Creadle Song by Padraic Colum
  13. The Magic Glasses by George Fitzmaurice
  14. The Weaver's Grave by Seumas O'Kelly
  15. Chamber Music by James Joyce

Each artist has recontextualised, reinterpreted, or directly responded to the original texts or to Clarke's depiction of them.
