ABOUT THE ARTIST

ANN MECHELINCK

Ann Mechelinck is a textile artist, originally from Belgium and now based in West Cork. She graduated in Applied Arts from Crawford College of Art and Design in 2015.

Her practice is focused on studying moss and lichens - interpreting these tiny organisms, their purpose, their meaning, their colours and textures.

She believes that traditional skills such as weaving and embroidery, passed from generation to generation, need to be kept alive in today’s day and age where everything has become mechanised or computerised. For that reason, she deliberately work solely by hand, using only Irish yarns, nurturing a slower pace of life and a more conscious way of living and working, merging traditional techniques into contemporary, abstract artworks.

Ann's work has featured in many group shows, in Ireland and Internationally, and in 2016 was the subject of a window display in the fashion store, Brown Thomas.
