FRAGMENTS OF THE PAST
MAPS FOR THE FUTURE

“Fragments of the Past, Maps for the Future”, which runs from 6 February until 1 March,
features the work of Mary Butler and Rachel Walsh.

Mary, an artist based in Kilkenny, creates assemblages from recycled materials that are inspired by architecture, design, urban shapes and landscapes.

Mary Butler’s work represents an eco-conscious approach to creativity, fostering a harmonious relationship between artistic expression and environmental responsibility.

It is inspired by the latent potential she sees in her chosen materials, which currently mainly consists of wood, nails, screws and scrap metal.

Elements of formal composition principles, such as texture, colour, shape, pattern and visual tension guide her decisions, though she is equally guided by intuition and instinct.

Particular pieces see her focus on the significance of negative space; the breathing spaces between objects; and the impact of these decisions on the relationships between each object, how they occupy the space and its overall effect on the final piece.

Colour is particularly important to her. It has an important aesthetic value but also because the human brain connects to colour, it evokes memories and arouses emotions, thus supporting the viewer in. connecting with and relating to the work.

Rachel, a local Cork artist, creates mixed media maps and ceramics based on the urban fabric of Cork City.

Rachel Walsh makes large scale mixed media collaged maps of Cork City which explore the many layers of memory that lie beneath the surface of the buildings, structures and spaces that we pass by every day. Through a process of deconstruction and reconstruction, Rachel can respond to their unique mood and atmosphere using texture, colour and mark making. The intention is to engage the audience with a sense of place and belonging.
